Before You Add Your Teenage Driver to Your Policy, Give Us a Call
Before You Add Your Teen Driver to Your Auto Policy… Read This First
If you’ve got a teenager who’s just started driving, first of all: I see you.
My own daughter just started driving this month, so I’m right there with you in the passenger seat — equal parts proud, terrified, and triple-checking the brakes that aren’t actually on my side.
And as both a parent and an insurance agent, there’s one thing I really want you to do before you add your teen driver to your auto policy:
Call me first. Don’t add your teen yet.
I know, that sounds dramatic. But a quick conversation can save you from sticker shock, missed discounts, and coverage gaps you didn’t even know were there.
Why Adding a Teen Driver Changes Everything
Here’s the honest truth:
Teens = higher risk = higher premiums.
Insurance companies look at statistics, and teens — especially new drivers — are one of the highest-risk groups on the road. That means your rates can jump quickly once you add them to your policy.
But here’s the part most parents don’t realize:
You actually have more control than you think.
How you add your teen, what car they’re rated on, which discounts you unlock, and how your policy is structured can all make a big difference in what you pay.
That’s why it’s so important not to rush into adding them online or through an app before you talk to your agent.
Don’t Miss Out on the Discounts Your Teen Might Qualify For
One of the biggest myths?
Parents think, “My teen is a good kid and a good student — that alone should help my rate.”
Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn’t. And sometimes the discount is there, but it’s not automatically applied unless we ask for it and send in proof.
A couple of discounts we often look at:
✅ Good Student Discount
If your teen maintains good grades (often a “B” average or better), many carriers offer a Good Student Discount.
But usually:
It has to be requested
You may need to provide report cards or transcripts
It may need to be updated regularly
It’s not always automatic — and every carrier is a little different — so this is one of the first things I check for you.
✅ Smart Policy Review
This is where I go through your policy with a fresh set of eyes:
Are your liability limits still enough now that you have a teen on the road?
Is your teen listed on the right vehicle (sometimes rating them on a lower-value, safer car can save money)?
Are there any bundles (home + auto, multiple cars, etc.) you’re not using yet?
Are we set up for future discounts, like safe driving or telematics?
Sometimes the best “discount” is simply structuring your policy the smart way from the start.
Why You Shouldn’t Just Add Your Teen Driver Online
Most carrier apps and websites make it very easy to add a driver with a couple of clicks.
But “easy” doesn’t always mean “smart.”
When you do it alone online, you might:
Add them to the wrong vehicle
Miss out on available discounts
Forget to adjust coverage limits now that you have more at stake
End up with a bill that leaves you wondering, “Wait… why did my premium just jump that much?”
A short conversation with a real human (hi, that’s me 👋) can help you understand the impact before you commit to changes.
A Few Things We’ll Talk About Together
When you reach out before adding your teen, here are some of the things I walk you through:
1. Which Car Your Teen Will Drive Most
Is there a “designated” teen car? Is it an older sedan? A newer SUV? Sharing with you?
How we assign drivers to vehicles can affect your rate.
2. Your Coverage Limits
Now that you have a teen on the road, your liability exposure is higher.
We’ll make sure your limits still make sense for your family and your finances.
3. Deductibles and Comprehensive/Collision
We’ll look at repair costs, vehicle value, and your comfort level to see if your deductibles still fit your situation.
4. Discount Opportunities
We’ll go over:
Good student discounts
Multi-vehicle or multi-policy savings
Possible safe-driver or telematics programs
Any carrier-specific perks that might apply to your teen
From One Parent to Another…
I know this season is emotional.
You’re handing over the keys — and a lot of responsibility — to someone you still remember buckling into a booster seat.
That’s why I don’t just look at this as a policy change. I look at it as a family milestone that deserves a little extra care and attention.
When we talk, my goal is simple:
To help you find the smartest, most affordable way to add your teen — without sacrificing the protection your family needs.
